Nadia walked to the doorway, holding Eli close.
She needed air.
She needed space.
Because the man she had married out of desperation was not who she thought he was.
And the life she had accepted as her punishment was not the real story.
But the revelation was not yet complete.
Because wealth alone was not the danger.
The danger was what that wealth would awaken.
Two days after Nadia discovered the truth, Jonah received a call.
He listened quietly. His face became serious. Then he ended the call and turned to Nadia.
“It is time,” he said.
“Time for what?” Nadia asked.
Jonah looked at Eli, then back at Nadia.
“Time to go home,” he said. “To the place I ran from.”
Nadia’s chest tightened.
“What will happen to us?”
Jonah’s voice was steady.
“Whatever happens, I will not leave you behind.”
They traveled—not in a loud convoy, not in a public display.
Jonah moved like a man who understood danger.
When they arrived in the city, they entered a high building—tall, glass, guarded.
A security man opened the door and greeted Jonah with deep respect.
“Sir,” the guard said.
Nadia’s stomach turned again.
They rode an elevator to the top floor. The doors opened into a quiet, luxurious space—a boardroom.
People in suits stood up. Some smiled too quickly. Some stared at Nadia as if she were a surprise they did not approve of.
An older man with cold eyes stepped forward.
“Jonathan Hale,” he said. “Welcome back.”
Jonah did not correct the name. He simply sat down.
Nadia sat beside him, holding Eli.
The older man continued.
“We were worried. The company has needed leadership.”
Jonah’s voice was calm.
“I see.”
A woman at the table spoke.
“We have managed things, but there are complications.”
Jonah nodded.
“Explain.”
The older man leaned forward.
“There is a will,” he said. “Your father’s will.”
Nadia’s heart beat faster.
Jonah’s eyes narrowed slightly.
“What about it?”
The man smiled thinly.
“It states that you cannot fully assume control until you are married with a child—an heir.”
Nadia’s breath caught.
Jonah’s jaw tightened.
The older man’s eyes moved to Nadia and the baby.
“And now,” he said, “you arrive with a woman and a child.”
The room shifted.
Nadia understood then: this was not just about Jonah hiding.
This was about Jonah being hunted.
Because in the world of power, family is not always love.
Sometimes family is strategy.
Jonah’s voice cut through the room, calm but sharp.
“This is my wife,” he said. “And this is my son.”
The older man’s face faded.
A woman at the table whispered something to another man.
Jonah continued.
“I have returned to take my place. The company belongs to Hale Holdings, not to hungry hands.”
The older man’s face hardened.
“You disappear for years, then return with a stranger and a baby. Do you think we will accept this easily?”
Jonah stared him down.
“I am not asking.”
