PART 1:
My best friend promised a surprise would be revealed at her wedding, and I laughed it off at first. But as the days passed without answers, I started to realize I might not be ready for whatever she was planning.
Wren and I, both 29, have been best friends for over 10 years. We told each other everything, or at least I thought we did. Until she said she was engaged, but wouldn’t tell me his name.
“It’s a surprise,” Wren said with a grin. “I want to see your face at the wedding.”
I laughed it off.
But weeks turned into months. No photos. No introductions. Just that same smile.
A week before the wedding, everything changed.
We were at Leah’s place when she leaned in and whispered:
“You seriously don’t know it’s Callum?”
My world stopped.
Callum. My ex-fiancé.
The man who proposed… then disappeared three weeks before our wedding.
We were expecting a child when he left.
I woke up alone in a hospital bed… grieving a baby that never took a breath.
No explanation. No goodbye.
Back at Leah’s, I said nothing.
I didn’t call Wren.
I didn’t confront him.
I just decided…
I would go to the wedding.
On the day, I showed up looking perfect. Calm. Smiling.
Like nothing was wrong.
Wren walked down the aisle, glowing. She caught my eye and nodded.
Then Callum saw me.
And froze.
Like he’d seen a ghost.
Good.
The ceremony went on.
At the reception, laughter filled the room.
But I sat quietly…
A box resting in my lap.
Not a gift.
A weapon.
When it was time for speeches, I stood up.
Took the mic.
Smiled.
“Dear couple… I have a surprise for you.”
The room went silent.
I handed Wren the box.
“Go ahead… open it.”
She lifted the lid—
…and everything changed.
