I Woke up in the Middle of the Night to Find a Total Stranger Lying Next to Me Instead of My Husband

“Where’s my Scandinavian lamp? My rubber ducks? My cardboard cutout of that angry TV chef?”

Before I could respond, the front door opened.

“Babe?” Christian called. “Why are your clothes all over the hallway?”

He stepped into the room… and froze.

“What the hell is going on?” he demanded. “Who is this guy?!”

“Christian, I swear, I just got home and found him here!”

The stranger stood up, swaying slightly, squinting at the wall.

“That’s not my wedding photo… those people aren’t even wearing dinosaur costumes.”

“Of course not!” I snapped. “This isn’t your house!”

“I’m Max,” he said. “I just moved in next door. Number 42. The one with the flamingo wearing a top hat.”

“We’re 24,” Christian said. “With the motorcycle gnome.”

Max nodded slowly. “Ah… that explains it. I was at the bar… then more bourbon… then even more bourbon… and then the bourbon started having bourbon…”

I couldn’t help it—I burst out laughing.

“I lost my keys,” Max continued, “and saw an open window that looked exactly like mine.”

“Because these houses are identical!” Christian said.

“In my defense,” Max added, “your throw pillows are very similar to mine. Though yours have fewer taco stains. Also, no one’s ever compared my legs to an overgrown lawn before.”

At that point, I was laughing so hard I could barely stand.

“I can’t believe my wife cuddled with our drunk neighbor,” Christian said, shaking his head with a smile.

“And rubbed his hairy legs,” Max added.

“I can’t believe I’m still wet,” he laughed. “My wife is going to love this story.”

Eventually, we all calmed down.

“Look,” Christian said, “it’s almost 4 a.m. You’re not breaking into any more houses tonight.”

“You can sleep on the couch,” I offered.

“Better than jail,” Christian added.

The next morning, I woke up to the smell of coffee and laughter.

Christian and Max were sitting at the kitchen bar like old friends.

“So there I was,” Max said, “thinking someone redecorated my entire house overnight.”

“And replaced all your family photos,” Christian added.

“Your wife makes a very convincing stranger,” Max laughed.

I smiled, sitting down with them.

“Just wait until you hear how Christian and I met,” I said.

And just like that, our bizarre night turned into the beginning of an unexpected friendship.
