Daniel Hale, Margaret’s longtime attorney, walked in carrying a thick folder.
His expression was carefully neutral.
But I noticed something strange.
When he saw the baby, he didn’t look surprised.
He looked… resigned.
Like he had been expecting this exact scene.
“Mrs. Whitmore requested all relevant parties be present,” he said calmly.
Then he nodded politely toward Vanessa.
“Ms. Clarke is included.”
Included.
The word echoed in my head like a slap.
Margaret had known.
Somehow she had known everything.
I sat slowly, my legs suddenly unreliable.
Across the table Ethan leaned back confidently.
He had always assumed one thing:
Everything Margaret owned would eventually belong to him.
The Whitmore real estate holdings.
The investment firm.
The family estate outside Savannah.
It was worth millions.
And he was the only son.
Daniel Hale opened the folder.
“Margaret Whitmore executed her final will and testament on March 3rd,” he began.
He paused slightly.
“She also left a personal letter to be read aloud.”
Vanessa adjusted the baby.
Ethan crossed his arms like a man waiting for his inheritance.
Then Daniel unfolded the paper.
The Letter That Changed Everything
His voice grew slower.
More deliberate.
“To my daughter-in-law, Claire Whitmore…”
Ethan’s head snapped up.
“…if you are hearing this letter, then my son has finally shown you who he truly is.”
Silence dropped over the room.
Ethan shifted in his chair.
“That’s ridiculous,” he muttered.
But the lawyer kept reading.
“And if he has chosen to sit beside another woman while you remain his wife, then my suspicions about his character were correct.”
Vanessa’s smile faded slightly.
The baby made a soft squeaking sound.
Daniel turned the page.
“For several years, I have watched Ethan become more selfish, more careless with the people who love him.”
Ethan slammed a hand on the table.
“This is absurd. Read the actual will.”
Daniel didn’t react.
He just continued.
