But that wasn’t all. She confided in me that she was going through a very difficult time, a private struggle she hadn’t yet found the strength to share with her husband. That dinner, those laughs, that closeness… it wasn’t a secret or a betrayal, but a moment of support, a necessary respite in a difficult period.
At that precise moment, all my certainties crumbled.
Learning to be silent in order to better support. A week later, she chose to confide in her husband. I wasn’t invited to speak, to explain, or to justify anything. I was simply asked to be present, discreetly and kindly. And that was more than enough.
This moment profoundly affected me. I understood how invisible and fragile personal struggles can be, and how clumsy an outsider’s perspective, even one driven by good intentions, can be.
