“You accused me of cheating for years,” I said. “You tried to use my child to cut him out of the will. You set this up.”
Robert slammed his hand on the table.
“Enough.”
He looked at Patricia like a stranger.
“You used my illness to force this. You threatened my grandson over inheritance.”
“I was protecting what was ours,” she cried.
“Ours?” he said coldly.
Dave stepped back when she reached for him.
“You are my son,” she said.
“That’s not what I asked.”
Then I spoke.
“This ends tonight. Sam does not hear one word of this. Ever.”
Robert nodded immediately. “Agreed.”
He turned to Patricia.
“You don’t get to say his name.”
She froze.
“The will is being rewritten,” Robert said. “Into a trust. You will control none of it.”
She panicked. “You can’t be serious!”
“I have never been more serious.”
Dave looked at her, exhausted.
“You didn’t just lie to him. You made my wife and son pay for it.”
Then he turned to me. “Let’s go.”
We left.
That night, Dave stood in Sam’s room for a long time, just watching him sleep.
Later, he said quietly, “I don’t know who I am right now.”
I took his hand.
“You are Sam’s dad.”
He let out a broken laugh. “That’s the one thing I know.”
“Then hold on to that.”
A few days later, Robert met Dave alone.
When Dave came back, he said:
“DNA doesn’t undo a lifetime.”
Robert had raised him. Loved him. That hadn’t changed.
Sam would stay in the will. So would Dave.
Patricia, however, was done controlling anything.
Then the messages started—long, frantic excuses.
He read them once.
Then he blocked her.
In the end, the only person she cut out was herself.
We still see Robert, though less often now. His health is worse. But when he sees Sam, his whole face softens.
They build block towers, argue about dinosaurs, and eat too much ice cream before dinner.
Patricia spent five years trying to prove my son didn’t belong.
In the end, the only person she removed from the family… was herself.
