In the quest for natural health remedies, oil pulling stands out as an ancient practice making a modern comeback. With roots in Ayurvedic medicine, this technique involves swishing oil in your mouth to purportedly improve oral health and detoxify the body. Intrigued by its promises of whiter teeth and fresher breath, I decided to delve into a week-long experiment with raw, solid coconut oil to see if these claims hold any weight.
Throughout history, natural oils have been used for their health benefits, but the idea of using coconut oil as a mouthwash substitute was both novel and intriguing. Armed with a jar of organic, extra-virgin coconut oil, I embarked on this unusual journey, ready to document any changes and challenges that might arise.
1. Why I Decided To Try Oil Pulling With Raw Coconut Oil
The decision to try oil pulling stemmed from a combination of curiosity and a desire for better oral health. Many proponents claim that it’s a simple way to enhance dental hygiene without the use of harsh chemicals. Coconut oil, in particular, is renowned for its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties, making it an attractive option for this experiment.
Additionally, coconut oil is rich in lauric acid, which is known to kill harmful bacteria, fungi, and viruses. With these benefits in mind, I measured out one tablespoon (approximately 15 ml) of solid coconut oil each morning, eager to discover if a week of this practice could make a noticeable difference.
2. The Awkward Reality Of Swishing A Thick, Solid Glob Every Morning
The first morning of oil pulling was an unexpected challenge. As I scooped a thick, solid glob of coconut oil into my mouth, the texture was quite foreign. It took a few seconds to melt into a liquid, which was a strange sensation in itself. Swishing the oil around my mouth for the recommended 15-20 minutes felt like an eternity.
Initially, the taste was pleasant enough, but maintaining the swishing motion proved to be more cumbersome than anticipated. My jaw muscles were not accustomed to such an extended workout, and I found myself struggling to occupy my mind during the process.
