“And when Yara said no, Lila told people she was bitter. The money was bad enough. The lie was worse.”
Lila snapped, “You’re not doing this here.”
“You already did this,” he said.
Then he looked at me.
“I’m sorry I didn’t see it sooner.”
He turned back to the crowd.
“There won’t be a wedding today. I won’t marry someone who uses her sister like this.”
Shock spread through the yard.
Lila stared at me.
“You really had to play the victim?”
I laughed.
“You uninvited me because I stopped paying.”
Dan held up the envelope.
“There’s a $12,000 check. It should’ve come from Lila—but it didn’t. So it came from me.”
Lila shouted, “Are you insane?”
“No. I’m done.”
Mom tried to intervene.
“You don’t make decisions like this in a driveway.”
“This wasn’t decided here,” he said.
“It was decided when cruelty became normal.”
Then he addressed everyone:
“The food is paid for. Go eat if you want. I won’t waste what Yara paid for.”
Lila’s bouquet trembled.
“So that’s it? You’re humiliating me?”
“No. You did that when you used your sister.”
Mom looked at me.
“Yara, say something.”
I did.
“I was good enough to fund the wedding. I just wasn’t polished enough to stand in it.”
No one had an answer.
Guests began drifting away.
Mom lingered.
“You know how your sister gets.”
“Yes,” I said.
“And you taught her I’d stay anyway.”
Then I went inside and closed the door.
For once, the mess wasn’t mine.
